Guidelines for the Protection of Environmental Human Rights Defenders

The rights and roles of Human Rights Defenders in Indonesia have not received sufficient attention. Environmental Human Rights Defenders who are at the forefront of preserving nature, both individuals and communities, are still vulnerable to pressure, violence, and death threats. In fact, all forms of pressure are contrary to the constitution and laws and regulations.

Based on these conditions, Yayasan Pusaka Bentala Rakyat and Tifa Foundation consider protection guidelines for environmental human rights defenders as an urgent need. This guidebook is expected to strengthen and increase the capacity of indigenous and local communities in their advocacy efforts to secure and protect land rights, rights to livelihoods, rights to the environment, and the right to participate in determining development in their living areas.
