Personal Data Protection Training for Journalists

Classroom atmosphere during training

With the support of ABC International Development through the Indonesia Media Program, Tifa Foundation in collaboration with the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Indonesia held a Personal Data Protection Training for Journalists in Jakarta on 5-7 July 2024.

This training responds to the issuance of Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection (UU PDP) in Indonesia in October 2022, which presents responsibilities for companies and media organizations as controllers of personal data. Companies and media organizations as well as journalists need to understand the impact of the PDP Law on data processing for journalism work and other business processes. In addition, this training also aims to increase the capacity of journalists regarding the principles and good practices of personal data protection in reporting.

Throughout 3 days, 30 journalists selected from various cities were invited to understand the intricacies of the Personal Data Protection Law and its intersection with the Press Law, Information Disclosure Law, and Broadcasting Law. Through quizzes and case studies, journalists were facilitated to analyze the balanced application of the principles of personal data protection, press ethics, and fulfillment of public interest in reporting.

On the last day, journalists formulated steps that need to be taken, both by the Press Council, media companies, journalists, and other media staff to support the institutionalization of personal data protection in the press ecosystem and strengthening protection for journalists.

A similar training will be held again in Makassar in August 2024, stay tuned for the excitement of the training!
